Deep Brain Stimulation

Overview

Deep brain stimulation has been used as a treatment for tremors, dystonia, Parkinsons disease and clinical depression. Its use as a treatment for several other diseases or disorders is currently under research. Deep brain stimulation consists of the use of electrical impulses to disrupt electrical activity in specific parts of the brain. Usually, a device similar to a pace maker is implanted under the collar bone with wires running from the device to the leads that have been implanted in the parts of the brain appropriate to the patient’s condition.
